This year's winner of the Newbery Medal is Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures by Kate DiCamillo. Flora rescues a flying squirrel from an accident with a vacuum cleaner and that is just the beginning! The book is funny, exciting, and amazing. Sophie loves it!

The book, Kit and Mateo Journey into the Clouds by Carl Meister, is both fiction and nonfiction. The main characters go on a trip with Little Cloud and learn all about different kinds of clouds and the water cycle. Murphy thinks this is a cool way to learn about weather. Happy Birdday Tacky by Helen Lester is another story about that one-of-a-kind penguin, Tacky. His friends throw a perfect birthday party for him. Tacky has other ideas for what makes a fun party. You will laugh out loud when you read it. Sophie can tell you all about it! Patricia MacLachlan (author of Sarah, Plain and Tall) has written a book about writing called Word After Word After Word. In this story, a fourth grade class has a visiting poet for several weeks and their lives are changed by the experience. If you have ever thought you might like to become an author someday, this is the book for you! Check out what Sophie says about it below: Have you ever dreamed of taking off into outer space? Would you like to wear a spray-on space suit? You will feel like you are blasting off when you read Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce. In this story, eleven-year-old Liam wins a contest that allows him to travel on a rocket with four other kids. Hear what Murphy has to say about it: |
